The big deal is - it's the most satisfying thing you can experience. I know, big statement. But connecting with your deepest self and experiencing high states of consciousness is right up there on the scale of most amazing things to experience in the world. It's up there with your first orgasm, the birth of your child, the euphoria from a huge achievement...
Most people at some point in their lives realize that they want something more. We look for that more in a partner, a new job or car, in creating a family, getting fit, charity work...and sometimes these things do bring a deep satisfaction to us.
And sometimes they're not enough.
Other times we unconsciously address our inner wanting with distractions - Game of Thrones, food, study, exercise, alcohol, whatever. Not that all of these things aren't fun and interesting and have their place, but do they really satisfy that quiet voice inside that insistently knocks at the door saying "Hey, who are you really? What's the point of all this? I want more..."
At the end of your life that little voice is going to account for how you lived, how much you loved, and how present you were in your life, both with yourself and other people. What did you really want in your heart of hearts? Did you do it? Did you overcome? Did you connect? Did you heal that rift?
For me, spiritual awakening is the thing that satisfies the deepest wanting I have inside. Experiences of myself feeling connected and at one with the world, with other people, exploring what is behind the surface of things, and sharing those experiences with others, helping each other feel it and be it, this is the thing that lights my inner fire.
And it's not just about sitting alone and meditating, it's about bringing LIFE to your life. Richness, depth, calm, enthusiasm, compassion, warmth, humour, lightness, freedom - being more, seeing more, being more alive, more present, more awake.
If you have ANY inkling or wondering about what more there might be to life - seek it. You will not be disappointed. Sincere seeking on a spiritual path is a foundational piece - if you truly ask inside, things will come to you.
I'm not here to convince anyone that spiritual realms and spiritual presences are real. That's a waste of time. If you're interested, open yourself to having an experience. Try a meditation class. Read a book. Have a conversation. Take a step. If you're not interested, you probably wouldn't be reading this blog all the way to the end ;-)
